26 DEGREES

Chase heard a helicopter touchdown on the rooftop of the old Langley building. He only hoped it was their boss, Miller, bringing more agents.  Several men had entered the building, sent by Dimitri's father. Looking for Dimitri, they had made their way down into the basement. Chase, and his partner Casey, had set themselves up, ready for Dimitri and his men to storm in, trying to escape.

But, when the door flew open, it was Miller and several fellow agents. Chase breathed a sigh of relief as they entered the room, tossing Casey and Chase more ammunition for their weapons only seconds before Dimitri and his men came rushing through the door.

The agents took cover as Miller shouted, “Dimitri, put down your weapons.”

Dimitri laughed. “WHY? No one’s going to stop us; we’re getting out of here. You put down YOUR guns.”

They moved around the room, circling for a better position. Dimitri seemed to spot Chase, and a shot rang out from Dimitri’s gun, the bullet flying over his head. He and Casey crouched to the floor near a filing cabinet, and Miller rolled, laying down beside a brown marble desk as bullets started soaring.

Dimitri yelled across the room. “Do you like that?”

“You need to turn yourself back in,” Chase yelled back.

            Dimitri laughed. “Not a chance.”

Trying to get closer, Chase ran for cover, catching Dimitri’s attention as Casey moved around the other side.

“Not close enough, friend,” Dimitri smirked as he shot a round of bullets at Chase.

Chase escaped the onslaught of bullets, watching as Dimitri took cover, one of his men tossing him a knife. Not giving Dimitri a chance to situate himself, Casey lunged at him, knocking Dimitri to the ground.

Dimitri stood and side-kicked him, knocking Casey out. Chase watched his partner get knocked out, running over to check his pulse as Dimitri ran towards the stairwell door. Chase took quick aim, shooting at the door before Dimitri was able to escape.

Dimitri ducked behind a desk, looking back towards Chase. Catching Chase’s eye, Dimitri ran at him, gun in hand, shooting rounds in Chase’s direction as he threw himself behind cover. Casey started to wake, his head nodding back and forth. Getting up, he joined his partner in taking shots at Dimitri.

“You’re no match for me; we can go on all day,” Dimitri laughed then yelled louder, "You see, my men are very loyal, and they came well equipped.”

Dimitri tossed a smoke bomb in their direction and started shooting, the shots fast and steady as he made another break for the door. Chase took aim, straining to see through the smoke. He took a shot, catching Dimitri in the leg and sending him to the floor.

Chase smirked as what could only be expletives came pouring from Dimitri’s mouth as he yelled in Russian.

“What did you just do to me?” Dimitri howled, covering his eyes and turning from the sight of his blood on the floor. “You shot me in my leg!”

The other agents had subdued Dimitri’s men, so Chase stood and started towards him, watching as the man on the floor grabbed at his leg, his hands covering in blood.

Dimitri glared at him. “You're going to pay for this.”

Casey walked up, weapon ready, and kicked Dimitri’s gun away.

Chase looked him in the eyes, “Now you can last all day in that jail cell.” Chase handcuffed Dimitri and EMS was dispatched as agents escorted his men down into a cell.

Chase accompanied Dimitri in the EMS truck as they rode to the hospital. He was leaving nothing to chance.

At the hospital, Chase and Casey waited for Dimitri to come out of surgery. Two hours later, still no Dimitri. Chase gave his partner a look. Something was wrong. Drawing their weapons, they pushed past the nurse and made their way to the operating room. Dimitri was gone.
